We all definitely know what cars are, but many people actually don’t know the type of car they drive or own, Here in Nigeria, any thing with SUV shape is called a Jeep, Yes, I know you’re laughing right now because you’re guilty as charged, and Car without the “JEEP” like shape/body, is a normal Car.
Well, that’s now in the past, as you’ve come here, you’ll definitely get to know the difference between all these Car types.
Crossover or Crossover utility Vehicle, or Crossover SUV is a type of automobile that has elevated ride height or ground clearance built on a Unibody Chassis construction shared with normal Passenger Cars, as opposed to the traditional Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) which are built on a Body-on -Frame Chassis Construction which is very similar Pick-up Trucks.
According to Mitsubishicars.com, they described Crossovers as thus “While consumers and automakers alike use the terms interchangeably – which is unsurprising given the many styling similarities they share – key differences do exist. Put simply, a crossover is lighter and built on a car platform, while a traditional SUV is heavier and uses a truck chassis. There are, however, a few additional things to help you differentiate between these two unique vehicle types.
SUV, this initials stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, Popularly called “JEEP” here in Nigeria.
Hence, this is a car classification which combines elements of normal road using passenger cars with the features from that of Off-road vehicles like Pick-up trucks, this features include but are not limited to ground clearance and four wheel drive.
Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) are built on a Body-on -Frame Chassis Construction which is very similar Pick-up Trucks.
According to BuyaCar.co, Another term in the US for the popular family vehicle is the “sport-ute.” SUV is a loose term that traditionally covers a broad range of vehicles with four-wheel drive that can be taken off-road and have the feel of a lighter truck. While the term SUV can be applied to larger vehicles, such as the Range Rover, Chevrolet Suburban, and Jeep-like SUVs, it can also apply to smaller vehicles that don’t have four-wheel drive and have a minimal capability of going off-road like the Honda CRV and crossover SUVs. Sport-utility is more than just a technical term for the SUV. It also means that the vehicle can get things done and has a quality made for the outdoors, such as scaling different terrains.
It is also worthy to note that there are different sizes of SUVs, we have the small-size SUV e.g the Toyota RAV-4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Tucson and Creta, Kia Sportage, etc.
For the Mid-size SUVs, we have the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa fe, IX35, etc,
For the Full-Size SUVs, we have the Likes of Toyota Landcruiser, Lexus LX570, 600, Mercedes benz GL 450,550 etc.
There are also other types that I didn’t mention like the Mini, Crossover and Compact SUVs.
Sedans are defined as cars with seats for four or more people, a fixed roof, and a boot/ trunk that is separate from the part of the car that you sit in.
According to Wikipedia.com, they defined it as “A sedan or saloon (British English) is a passenger car in a three-box configuration with separate compartments for an engine, passengers, and cargo”
There are different types of sedans, but we will not go deep into this today.
A Wagon according to Kia.com, “ is a vehicle with a low floor that hangs close to the ground, with its length that is greater than its height, and a long roofline that falls past its rear doors.”
According to wikipedia.org“A station wagon (US, also wagon) or estate car (UK, also estate),is an automotive body-style variant of a sedan/saloon with its roof extended rearward over a shared passenger/cargo volume with access at the back via a third or fifth door (the liftgate or tailgate), instead of a trunk/boot lid. The body style transforms a standard three-box design into a two-box design — to include an A, B, and C-pillar, as well as a D-pillar. Station wagons can flexibly reconfigure their interior volume via fold-down rear seats to prioritize either passenger or cargo volume”.
Coupe can defined as a vehicle with a closed roof, 2-door passenger car with a three-box body for the engine and the passenger compartments. It is of Most importance to note that, a coupe is a vehicle which has interior space that is under 33 cubic feet.
It can either be a Hard-top Convertible coupe, or Soft- cover Convertible Coupe.
